Rational reactions

They looked at me as if I was mad when I told them about my irrational fear of small islands. But I'd already told them to expect something irrational, which surely meant that I was sane enough myself to appreciate the insanity. So why were they looking at me like I was mad? Wasn't that an irrational response? Or was it rational?
